The women seeking housing at PATH Santa Barbara have become homeless for different reasons: lost jobs, high medical bills, divorce, death of a spouse, displacement from renovated properties, mental health issues, and addiction. On average, women in the interim housing program stay two to four months. PATH Santa Barbara spends more than $12,000 per year fumigating bed bugs from its very old wooden bunk beds and mattresses – money that could otherwise be used to support the agency’s core mission of ending homelessness for individuals, families, and communities. This grant will pay to purchase and install 50 new steel-frame beds and 50 bug-resistant, waterproof, easy-to-sanitize mattresses for the women’s section, plus costs to dismantle and dispose of old beds. New beds and mattresses will give the homeless women at PATH Santa Barbara a clean, safe and comfortable place to rest as they work with staff to stabilize their lives and find permanent housing.
