As the only local shelter open 24 hours a day, Casa Esperanza includes a secure, segregated women's dormitory with 40 beds for homeless women. The grant paid for six of these beds for the next year. The women's dormitory has been operating at full capacity this year, thanks to the more welcoming and secure environment created by Casa Esperanza's change to a sobriety model. The grant also allowed Casa Esperanza to recruit and train 10 volunteer female Navigators to offer friendship and guidance to an estimated 150 women, steering them to health programs, legal services and housing options.
