Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are defined as early childhood trauma including neglect, abuse as well as household dysfunction. ACEs have been directly linked to negative long-term mental and physical health outcomes, including depression, cancer and heart disease. Early treatment is critical, and intervention at a young age has been effective in improving outcomes for mental and physical health. Carpinteria Health Care Clinic (CHCC), CALM and Carpinteria Children’s Project have come together to form a collaborative called the Carpinteria Resiliency Project. The collaborative creates a holistic system of care for low-income families at CHCC by integrating medical, behavioral health and social services. Families will be screened for ACEs and offered immediate counseling and relevant social services close to the clinic. This grant will pay for a specially-trained CALM therapist who will provide mental-health counseling to families who may need extended therapeutic services based on ACEs screening by CHCC. This will be an important step in transforming pediatric and family-oriented patient care in the Carpinteria community.
